A Grand Day Out – The South West Model Show

    Tank Show

As you may be aware, here at Warlord Games, we like tanks. A lot. What better place for us to hold our annual trade sales conference, then, than the legendary Tank Museum? Our trade team came from all over the world for this vitally important strategy meeting (That’s what they told us. Vitally important that it happened at the Tank Museum specifically. Not that I’m jealous. -ed.), and with so many Warlorders in one place, we decided it would be rude not to throw a bit of a bash as well!

We’ve recently partnered with the Tank Museum to run the South West Model Show on their hallowed grounds, and the coinciding trade conference ensured we’d be well staffed with helping hands. Naturally, at such a prestigious venue, we had to put on a big showing, and our team answered the call with demo tables aplenty, seminars from legendary Design Studio Painter Kirsten Williams and Konflikt ‘47 sculptor Jon Heeney, and a very well-attended ‘build-a-tank’ station. The environment perhaps had something of an effect on people’s desire to assemble something tracked and heavily armoured!

As well as talks, demo games and the opportunity to build your own tank, the South West Model Show also saw us host a Bolt Action tournament across the weekend. Who better to tell us all about it than Phil ‘Wardaddy’ Brewer, our very own budding tank commander and tame tournament organiser!

PB – When Warlord Games asked me to run a Bolt Action event at The Tank Museum, I knew that this needed to be no ordinary tournament. Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long to think of a theme… Tanks. And lots of them! Not quite thousands (wrong game, Phil! -ed.), but certainly plenty. All that was left to do was to choose a name…

Tanks A Lot! saw 30 players competing in four games across the weekend, with a rather impressive backdrop – The Tank Story exhibition hall! The brief was simple: build a 1,250 point list, make sure you include an Armoured Platoon and make sure it includes at least one DV9+ tank. The four missions were based upon those in the main rule book, but with some amendments to fit the location.

First up was Fury – a kill points mission, but with a bonus if your ‘Fury’ tank (minimum of DV9+) destroyed units, offset with a bonus for your opponent if they destroyed it. Seize the Assets was based on Key Positions, albeit with some restrictions to how Infiltrators could deploy, in order to prevent anyone deploying onto an objective before a shot had been fired or a tank had rumbled forward.

Leading the charge on the second day was Armoured Thrust – essentially Breakthrough, but with added kill points and the twist that only vehicles would score if they finished in the opponent’s deployment zone or exited the table. The final mission was Big Cats Hunting, another kill points mission, but one that rewarded taking out vehicles with either infantry assaults or artillery units. Plenty of players were heard over the weekend commenting on how they appreciated the twist to familiar missions, something I encourage all TOs to consider.

Some of my highlights of the weekend included Walden, Josh, and Andrew travelling all the way from the US to attend the tournament, several players attending their first ever Bolt Action tournament and the creativity and originality shown with many of the lists.

Peter decided that one Maus wasn’t enough, so he brought two. and not much else to go with them! He nearly managed to ensure both survived the whole weekend, but unfortunately for him one fell in the final game to Adam’s perseverance. This earned Adam the Maus Trap Award (yes, we did present him with an actual mouse trap!).

Everyone walked away with a memento from the weekend and the following claimed the main prizes:

The Michael Wittmann Award for 1st Place: Paul W

The Bernard Montgomery Award for 2nd Place: Sonny W

The Georgy Zhukov Award for 3rd Place: James G

The Don “Wardaddy” Collier Award for Most Sporting: James G

The Oddball Award for Best Force: Mark G

The Bob Semple Award for Wooden Spoon: James L

I’d like to thank both Jay and Kieran for their assistance over the weekend and, most importantly, the players themselves – everyone bought into the spirit of the event, games were played in good humour and the fortunes of (tabletop) war were celebrated by all.

We can’t wait to get back down to the Tank Museum for the 2027 edition of the South West Model Show – hopefully we’ll see you there!

Hobby Champions: Tom Reynolds’ Axis Force

We look at a great Axis army from the depths of Festung Wigan!

The team over at Warlord Games Wigan have been hard at work – not just with making sure our first store outside of Nottingham is running smoothly, but on their own hobby projects too! We spotted Wigan staffer Tom’s fantastic Axis collection on a recent supply run to the shop, kidnapped it for a photoshoot at HQ, and made him tell us all about it. It’s a hard old life for the gang up North!

Sprue Focus: US & British Heavy Weapons and Artillery

    Hvy weapons

The first thing you’ll notice is that the British 6-pounder and US 57mm M1 gun look suspiciously similar! That’s because in real life the US weapon was essentially a licence-built copy of the British gun. The reason there are two separate boxes is because of the crews; the gun frame in each is identical. On that frame you’ll find both barrel variants – with and without muzzle brake. There are also two different sets of wheels to represent the US and British versions, and even the folding airborne version of the carriage. As well as an ammo box, we’ve also included several shells and spent cases, which can be put in the hands of crewmen or used to decorate your bases.

The US heavy weapons frame includes two different tripods, and a total of three machine guns. There’s a .30 cal Browning for all your medium machine gun team needs, plus two .50 cal HMGs – the standard M2 heavy barrel and the AN/M2 ,which was an aircraft gun repurposed for use on the ground. The latter wasn’t used on tripods as standard, but was often fitted to vehicles – we’ve included it for the endless conversion potential, and as a little bit of variety!

There’s also an 81mm medium mortar with bipod and baseplate, and the box includes four 60mm bases, so with the 12 crew in total that means you can make a wide variety of different weapon combinations. Because the medium mortar and medium machine guns have three crew, and heavy machine guns four, how many weapons teams you can make depends on which types you choose. For example, if you go for two medium machine guns and two medium mortars you’ll have crew and bases for them all, plus you’ll have four spare heavy machine guns and two spare tripods.

If you assemble two heavy machine guns plus a mortar you’ll have one model left that you can use to make a Platoon Commander (three 25mm bases are also included), and have five heavy weapons left, including two MG tripods and a mortar bipod. All of these spare weapons are of course perfect fodder for conversions and kitbashes!

Whatever you decide, you will have at least four heavy weapons spare and enough mountings for three of them. Of course, the crew are completely compatible with the plastic infantry models, so none of those weapons need to go to waste. If you don’t have spare infantry in the bits box, you can order individual sprues from the webstore. That means that you can easily get up to six weapons teams from a single box, plus two extra HMGs to add to your vehicles.

The British heavy weapons sprue offers a similar range of options. The Vickers MMG has two barrel options; with or without the fabric cover, and also includes ammunition boxes and water cooling equipment. There’s a medium mortar, the trusty 3-inch, plus a heavy mortar as well. This 4.2” weapon threw an almost 20lb shell that in Bolt Action terms equates to a 3” template (and +3 PEN), making it deadly to even the toughest infantry, and even capable of destroying light armour.

Both crew frames have four soldiers in a variety of poses and with a range of arms designed specifically to interact perfectly with the weapons. The American crew has both kneeling and sitting legs, the latter to get under the small tripod, and both include a soldier holding his hands over his ears; a ‘must have’ for any mortar team.

As mentioned previously, the crew sprues are fully compatible with the existing range of plastic infantry. This includes the soldiers in different uniforms such as the 8th Army, US Army in winter uniforms, or the various airborne ranges. Eventually we’ll make plastic crew for these as well, but for now you can always convert them. At most you’ll need to chop a couple of hands off, which barely counts as converting, as all the infantry sprues include plenty of hands in different poses. We’ll share some conversion ideas in a future article, but suffice it to say that the possibilities are virtually endless!

    Automated Platoon Incoming!

    Robo

So here we are – the third new Special Platoon for Konflikt ‘47 lands on Friday, giving players another way to organise their forces. Just like the Totenrotte and Firefly Platoons, the new British Commonwealth Automated Platoon supplements the mandatory Assault Platoon, so taking one gives you access to up to one each of the other platoons. And, like those other new platoons, it allows players to tailor their forces to specific playstyles, while really leaning into the character of the faction. It also comes with special rules, new units, and some updates to existing ones. There’s lots to unpack here, so let’s get started!
